Can’t stand the person you’re married to? Fantastic! You could soon be a reality television star.
Production house Southern Star Entertainment has sent out the call for sparring couples willing to participate in the Jerry Seinfeld-produced show The Marriage Ref. It is the American comedian's first new TV show since Seinfeld ended in 1998, and the rights to make an Australian version were bought by Channel Seven at the international TV market MIPCOM, in Cannes, in October.
Seven also bought the rights to the American version of the show, which is due to air in the US in March 2010.
Billed as "a comic reality series", The Marriage Ref sends celebrities and a relationship referee in to help squabbling couples make peace. The series was created by Seinfeld, though he is unlikely to appear in either version.
Seven's pitch for the show makes it sound like a reality version of Married ... With Children. "Parenting, in-laws, bad habits or petty squabbles — no issue is off limits on The Marriage Ref."
Bickering will be the lifeblood of the show, but Seinfeld promises the intent is comedic, not therapeutic. "It's just the fun of the arguments, that's what the show is about. There's nothing in the show that's really too heavy or serious," he says in the press release issued by Seven.
"I think any time you have a man and a woman trying to get along, it's funny. But what's different about this show is you're seeing the actual arguments and some are very unusual, things that a writer couldn't make up."
Disputes will be brought before a celebrity panel comprising sports stars, entertainers and comedians. (Here's hoping Shane Warne is signed on as a relationship coach. Now that would be funny. And Tiger for the American version? I'd watch that.)
"‘The aspect of it that I think will appeal to men is that we're applying the sports simplicity to marriage complexity," Seinfeld says.
But women will find something to enjoy in the show, too, he insists. "Women love relationship problems, can't get enough of them."
